Szegedi Katalin

"I'm a nostalgic type, and this is how my illustrations are, too. I adore old items, especially those connected to memories. To those I can get very attached. I love fairy tales, not only illustrate them, but also to read them. They impersonate a condensed wisdom of all the important things in our life: death, love, intrigue, deceit and loyalty. Among them, oddly enough, are the sad tales that are really close to me. These melancholic or rather heartbreaking stories written for example by Oscar Wilde or even Andersen, are among my favorites ever since I was a child."

Szegedi Katalin was born on October 18, 1963 in Budapest.

She has enrolled in the College of Arts and Design Budapest (now the University of Arts and Design Budapest) with the intention of becoming a director of film. In that year, however there were no trainings in animation on the roll, so this is how she became acknowledged with applied graphics in book design. Later, this proved to be a stroke of luck, as she found true professional happiness by being a book illustrator. Pálfi György és Árendás József, two excellent illustrators, were her professors.  She earned her Master of Arts Degree in 1991. She began to illustrate while in college and her first book was published in 1989. Then she went to paint the 22 cards of the Tarot pack, which at that time was an entirely unknown genre in Hungary.

Theatre was also a defining experience with Szegedi Katalin, working for a few years as a puppet designer for Kolibri Theater in Budapest. Her work with the theatre will remain very close to her heart, but her true vocation was book illustration, even then…

In her youth, thanks to a scholarship she lived and worked in Rome for a few months. She became an instant admirer of Renaissance painting, but it was much impressed by the Pre-Raphaelite artists as well.

With more than forty books to her name, a style that is instantly recognizable, she is constantly looking for new forms of expression. In her recently published books traditional watercolors are beginning to replace the acrylic and collage technique images, used in the past.

In 2001, Szegedi Katalin began creating illustrations for foreign publishers as well, and her work won her Hungary’s prestigious “The Most Beautiful Children’s Book” prize. This distinction -The Hungarian equivalent to the Caldecott Medal - was repeated in 2003.   To visit Szegedi Katalin's blog, use the link.
